Scott Russell remembers the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics as the “time when Canadians fell in love with all winter sports”.

The CBC Sports Weekend senior host argues that “the cast of characters” assembled at those games made them the greatest ever.

“We were exposed to great international stars from many sports, not just from hockey. Canadians embraced the Winter Olympic Games and fell in love with them because of Calgary in 1988,” he says.

Each week, Eye on the Arctic turns its focus on the issues and people making a difference in Canada’s northern regions.
Inuit Language Week is wrapping up in Canada’s eastern Arctic territory of Nunavut this week.  During this period, the focus across the territory was on language activities and education.

While the language is still strong in the eastern Arctic, in many western Arctic communities the predominant language has become English.

Many Inuit youth are no longer able to speak their language and this has educators and politicians concerned.
