* Former Education Minister Josef Dobes has offered the government the
support of nine MPs in case LIDEM quits the coalition.

* A massive fire has burnt down a large part of a textile factory in
the Jicin region.

* Placido Domingo sings at Prague's O2 Arena on Saturday.

* Meteorologists have declared a smog alert in the Moravian-Silesian
region.

* Zelary writer Kveta Legatova has died, aged 93.

Dobes offers to help the coalition
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Former Education Minister Josef Dobes said that he has the names of at
least eight other MPs who would be willing to support the governing
coalition in case it looses the support of the LIDEM party, daily Pravo
reports. Many of the people Mr Dobes mentioned would be somewhat
controversial. Among them are Dobes's fellow former Public Affairs
party members Kristyna Koci, Jaroslav Skarka, Milan Stovicek, and some
MPs who have distanced themselves from the Civic Democrats because of
various scandals. The former minister believes that the coalition
should not fall, and in exchange for his support wants more support for
sports and improvements in government administration.

Fire caused some 200 million in damages
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A fire at a textile factory in the town of Horice in the region of
Jicin is estimated to have cause 200-million crowns in damages. The
massive fire started ealy on Saturday morning. Local firefighters were
able to contain the fire, but were still trying to put it out
completely in the afternoon. So far, the cause of the fire seems to
have been a spark caused by a technical defect, but investigations are
still underway. The Mileta factory is owned by an Indian company Alok
and employs a large percentage of the local population.

Placido Domingo will perform in Prague
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The world-famous tenor Placido Domingo will perform at a gala concert
in Prague's O2 arena on Saturday. The singer will perform alongside the
national philharmonic from the Slovak city of Kosice, and will be
joined by the sopranos Ana Maria Martinez and Eva Urbanova.

Poster defacing driver is out of jail
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roman Smetana, a former bus driver from Olomouc who was sentenced for
defacing election posters in 2010, was released from jail after
finishing the remaining 77 days of his 100-day sentence. He was given
the sentence after he refused to carry out court-ordered community
service. Mr Smetana may receive another jail sentence for having
previously refused to serve his sentence. Two cases filed against him
is still to be heard by the Olomouc regional court.

Smog alert declared around Silesia
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meteorologists have announced a smog alert in the Moravian-Silesian
region, except Ostrava, Karvina and Frydek-Mistek. The worst situation
is in Trinec, where the concentration of dust particles in the air is
almost three times the permitted limits. The authorities are asking
peopke with chronic breathing problems, heart disease, young children
and the elderly to limit physical activity and to stay indoors.

Zelary writer dies at 93
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The writer Kveta Legatova died on Friday night at the age of 93.
Although Ms Legatova has published her work since the 1950's, she is
best known for her collection of short stories Zelary, which was
published in 2001. This and a book called Jozova Hanule (2002) served
as the basis for the film Zelary, which came out in 2003.

Gorila Kijivu gives birth at Prague zoo
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A gorilla name Kijivu gave birth to her fifth child in Prague zoo on
Saturday. The zoo's oldest female gorilla Kamba is also expected to
give birth by the end of the year.

It should be overcast with light snow. The day highs will be between -1
and 2 degrees Celsius, with temperature going up in the upcoming days.

Opening the wounds of collectivization: Rustic Baroque in English
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A month ago the English translation of Rustic Baroque by Czech writer
Jiri Hajicek came out in the Czech Republic. The book won the
prestigious Litera Magnesia prize in 2006, and has received
international recognition as well. A historical novel that reveals the
complexities and struggles of the time of collectivization in
Czechoslovak countryside in the 1950's, Rustic Baroque also shows how
modern Czech society is still influenced by those events.
