Canada, Friends of Syria, call for more sanctions

Canada joined the United States and other countries of the “Friends of Syria” in Paris July 6, to discuss ways of putting more pressure on the government of President Bashar Al-Assad, and called for more sanctions.

U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton was harsh in her criticism of Russia and China for their lack of support with sanctions.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird echoed her remarks. In a media conference call from Paris, the Minister outlined Canada’s initiatives, and took the opportunity to suggest that the United Nations was at a turning point and losing relevance, and that the UN Security Council conduct in the Syrian situation “has been disgraceful”.

For people who don’t want to be tested in a clinic, a quick home test for HIV will soon be available in the U.S. and probably in Canada too. People around the world could benefit from such a test and some African countries are studying it with Canadian help. Lynn Desjardins has details.
