Ciao Categories: our recommendations to you

This year's winter will remain in our memories. With temperatures around -15 degrees and snowfalls up to 40 centimetres, many countries have experienced a cold, frosty and inconvenient winter. Now at the end of February, the winter slowly disappears and spring comes along.
Here some topics you can now look forward to:

Garden
Spring makes it easy for the enthusiast gardener to restart enjoying a garden experience. For the first cleaning works in the garden, he/she will just need to have a look on products in our sections garden Shredders, garden trimmers, or high pressure cleaners, as well as for advice other members in the sections plants, plant care and Garden furniture. Even if it's a bit too early to use the lawn-mover, read useful reviews and get ready to buy your own.

House
With Spring also the time for an annual spring cleaning has arrived.  For cleaning Products, home improvement tools, home furniture and tips from the community members, just visit our category household.

Fashion
Do you know the latest fashion trends for this spring? Jackets with shoulder pads for the ladies are apparently in again, as well as fancy pumps, dresses and foulards or scarves.

For the gents, things usually don't really change. Shirts, Jackets and Coats from our Man's fashion Category should make anyone happy.

Travel
Spring's weather is generally well known to be great for city and weekend trips. If you want for example to see an opera in Vienna, the Eifel tower in Paris, the fashion boutiques in Milan, the rambla in Barcelona or the Statue of Liberty in New York, just browse through our category Travel. In the same section, we also recommend you local entertainment, such as concerts in London or to a play in Manchester.

Spring is in the air. Discover new opportunities with Ciao.

Member Voice »

The Oscar nominations are out and promise to be an exciting ceremony on the 7th of March in Los Angeles.  In today's member voice, we would like to know how good your movie knowledge is. xhoneybeex was very kind to give us her predictions of the winners in the several nominated categories.

Best Movie?

I am guessing after all the hype that Avatar will win this. I am one of the minority groups that haven't seen it, as it just doesn't appeal to me. Against my better judgement, I saw 'Up' last year. I wasn't expecting much, but it really impressed me and even made me cry! I would love to see 'Up' win Best Movie, but sadly I don't think this is going to happen!

Best Actress in a Leading Role?

I am quite a fan of Sandra Bullock, but she has a lot of competition with many popular and talented actresses up against her. I know everything Meryl Streep touches seems to turn to gold, as with Helen Mirren. I think I would like to see Gabourey Sidibe win, as Precious looks a great film (have yet to see it yet!), very moving and touching, and it would be nice to see something a little different win. But my prediction is Meryl Streep.

Best Actor in a Leading Role?

Ooh, in my opinion you can't beat a bit of Colin Firth! I think he's a fine man (a little old for me, but you know...) and I really want him to win this! But my prediction is for Mr Clooney, as he's such a legendary actor.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role?

Haven't seen any of these films, sorry! I think the guy out of Inglourious Basterds is in with a shot, as that was meant to be a good film, wasn't it?! I want to see Stanley Tucci win, as I'm off to see The Lovely Bones soon and it's meant to be really good! My mum has read the book and loved it, albeit very sad!

Best Actress in a Supporting Role?

Apparently Mo'Nique is fabulous as Precious's abusive mother in the film. Again, I'd love her to win. I think Nine was a very over-hyped film, not one of my favourites by a long shot, although Penelope Cruz is a great actress, and very beautiful. My prediction is Penelope or Anna Kendrick.

Best Sound?

Again, I want Up to win! I think it was such a great film, with great animation, storyline and voiceovers. But my bet is on Avatar - I think it's the film that will steal the whole show and walk away with all the awards.

Best Camera?

This has got to be Avatar, hasn't it? There's no point in predicting it, in my opinion it's just too obvious! I hope I'm proved wrong, as I don't like it when one particular film wins everything.

Ending Note
Thanks so much for offering me the chance to participate in this interview. I am normally quite big on films, but feel a little useless here as I haven't seen many of the films! Hope I have been a help, and once again - come on 'Up!' x

Reading circle – live and let live?

Who at Ciao doesn't get invitations to reading circles? We have to admit that some of these invitations are definitely imaginative performances. Talking about "15:15" or "30:30", you might think about the score of a tennis match; in reality, it's the offer of a user to another to read and evaluate reciprocally the last 15 or 30 reviews.
In times when CIS Alerts aren't always properly working, there is actually nothing to say against these requests which also keep the communication between ciao users upright. And as we all know, the utility of our webpage is based on reading, commenting and rating reviews.

Most of the people who don't want to be part of these reading circles just ignore any requests or place a corresponding notification on their member profiles.
But why do so many users feel coerce by undesirable invitations? This might firstly have personal (and understandable) reasons. Some people consider these invitations as telephone calls of customer call centres; some are annoyed by the fact that their guest books are blemish by these requests.

In our opinion, all these reasons are understandable. But the difference to a telephone call is that you don't have to pick up the phone and have to accept any kind of contract. You can just ignore any request to a reading circle or delete it from your guest book through a simply click.
There are also many users, who really enjoy requests to reading circles. At the end of the day it does make sense to use this opportunity to collect community points and increase your community account balance.

In summary, we understand both sides of the coin: the ones that enjoy being invited to a reading circle as well as the ones feeling annoyed by these requests. But the decisive point is how the request has been made and how it has been declined." It's not what you say, but how you say it".

As already mentioned, appropriate notifications in guest books, can be ignored or deleted through a simply click.
If you feel bothered by the same user again and again concerning this issue, just send a mail to:feedback.uk@ciao-group.com . We will then inform him/her to stop sending you invitations to reading circles.
